Padang, the capital city of West Sumatra, Indonesia is also the largest city in the region. The city of Padang is situated on the western coast of the island of Sumatra and has a population of more than 750,000 people and an area of around 26.3 square miles.

Since Padang is the largest city and the capital of the region, the cuisine of the people living there, particularly the Minangkabau people, is known as Padang cuisine. You can find the Padang restaurants as a common sight throughout the city, as they are famous for their unique spicy food and they have a very different way of serving it. If you are a visitor to the restaurants of the city, you will find that the Padang food is normally cooked once every day. You can choose among those dishes until all the food is consumed. It is served in little portions of various dishes along with rice, which makes up a complete meal.

The food safety is of main concern in all the restaurants, as the customers take their own food out of the served communal dishes with their own hands. The restaurants of Padang are famous for their highly flavoured foods set in small dishes. A typical Padang dish includes stewed greens, curried fish, chilli eggplant, fried tempeh, fried chicken, curried beef liver and sambals. The best Padang dish is a spicy meat stew named Rendang.

The city of Padang is an important attraction and common transit point for all tourists and surfers, who travel to the Mentawai Islands, the Batu Islands and the West Sumatran highlands. Visitors have the option of reaching the city by air, as the city is served by Minangkabau International Airport, which has been newly opened. Apart from this, the city of Padang has the Teluk Bayur Harbour, which is considered to be the busiest and the largest harbour located on the western coast of Sumatra. Residents and visitors of the city also have the option of reserving taxis, cars or buses, if they want to travel in the city or reach the city from any neighbouring city. The city of Padang also offers cheap hotels, which are available just at five minutes’ walk from the heart of the city.
