Silkeborg Sights and Landmarks Guide, Denmark
No one could’ve thought that a seamless marriage between man and nature could ever be possible. And certainly, no one could’ve thought that such harmony could be found in a small town. That was before they heard of Silkeborg.
Silkeborg is a little town in central Denmark which takes pride in the fact that it is home to many of the most glorious sights that Mother Earth has to offer. The town’s combined forest area alone accounts to being the largest in the country. However, this little town of some 41,000 or so occupants takes greater pride in its claim of being a town that has “more than what meets the eye.”
Silkeborg as a travel destination is but a miniscule dot on the map of the world. However, Silkeborg’s terrains, waters and culture prove that size does not matter. Silkeborg promises a nature getaway for the city dweller and nirvana for the adventure-seeker. Take for example Silkeborg’s premier activity and recreation hub Søhøjlandet's Resort and Activty Centre. Here the entire family can enjoy an impressive array of indoor and outdoor activities. Experience a dip in a subtropical swimming pool or glide along ski tracks in summer or better yet go horseback riding or mountain climbing in the great outdoors. Set up a tent and build a camp, charter a canoe and then ride a bike; all this you can find in Silkeborg Sø Camping a little jewel of nature found at Silkeborg Langsø’s sand and surf.
Every day is a fishing holiday in Silkeborg as it is the Mecca of anglers. The town’s surrounding bodies of water abound with different types of fish. Take note though that a fishing permit is required and will only be granted to those aged 18 and above.
Is the outback not your thing? No problem Silkeborg is also home to a handful of museums and galleries to match just about every taste. Visit the town’s variety of museums that specialize in anything from automobiles such as the Jutland Automobile Museum to art in the Silkeborg Museum of Art, to the Tange Elmuseet where antiquity and science meet. Kids and the kids at heart will surely get a kick out of the Baboon Center (whose name alone evokes wacky fun) where go carts, inflatable jumping areas and gaming arcades unite.
For those who seek something to flex the brain muscles will enter the Labyrinthia. Check out the puzzle center and learn in the process about the history of mazes and labyrinths. Looking for a greater challenge? Find your way around in any of its seven wonderful mazes. Try it if you dare!
Individuals clamoring for some physical activities can try hitting a hole in one at the Silkeborg Golf Club. But what about those who don’t play golf or any sports at all? You won’t have trouble hitting balls at Silkeborg Fodbold Golf where, yes you play golf with a football! Go crazy at Indelukkets Minigolf where fun and not necessarily winning is everything.
If getting physical is not your style you can sit by the bleachers and watch the Silkeborg IF, the town’s esteemed football club, shoot some goals.
Where’s the food you say? Well you can find cafes and restaurants mushrooming all over the city. However, one food trip stands out among the rest as it combines history, shelter and food in one delightful experience. The Hotel- and Restaurantmuseum Ludvigslyst is a hotel whose existence dates back to 1906. It preserves the architecture and mood of that era and it stands out as a hotel restaurant and museum in one. Even the food selection is from the 18th century! There is indeed more than what meets the eye in the town of Silkeborg. It is but right for this town to take pride in that. Because aside from its being a larger-than-life experience of nature, Silkeborg is also a graceful combination of the gifts of nature and the fruits of human civilization. A day in this little town of Denmark is all it takes to charm you.
