Roskilde Sights and Landmarks Guide, Denmark

For more than a thousand years of existence, the city of Roskilde Denmark is Europe’s window to the past.

Dubbed as one of Denmark’s oldest cities, it is no wonder that the city’s visage in the form of its buildings is strongly reminiscent of the past. Today that very face of Roskilde is the city’s foremost attraction.

Deep in the heart of this ancient city lies the bustling square where the commercial life is continually thriving. The locals and tourists alike can enjoy walking the cobbled roads while surveying wares. The city’s manors castles and cathedrals are all historical centers by themselves. Their architecture and ambience are prized for their ability to give its visitors and observers the experience of an era.

Take the Cathedral Museum for example, which aside from being a larger-than-life relic of the 12th and 13th centuries, it also doubles up as a working church. Its red bricks have withstood over hundreds of years of change, and today it proudly welcomes more than 125000 visitors on its hallowed grounds.

Not far from it is the Roskilde Palace that was built some four hundred years after the cathedral culminated its construction. Today the palace also welcomes tourists and academic excursions and is the home of the city’s bishop.

To get to the lighter side of things, drop by Lejre Research Center where the whole family can embark on a trip back in time. Live in the exact conditions as they were from the Stone to the Viking Age. Time-travel could never be this close to the real thing and also time travel could not get any better than this.

Alternate the town and country experience and head for the woods. Visit the Boserup Forest and see the glory of nature. Witness the powers of the earth in the magnificent display of plant and animal diversity. Exit from the forested lands out into the Hedeland Recreational Area where a phenomenal display of the earth’s natural landscapes lays for humanity to experience. Here you can immerse yourself in a number of activities that will provide lifetime memories for you and your family. Try skiing down its slopes, race each other in go-karts or see for yourselves what “wine terraces” really are.

On land or by the sea, Roskilde delivers an experience of gigantic proportions. Behold the remains of the Viking rule in the face of five excavated Viking ships. Learn what Longships and Warships are and then see them with your own eyes.

Roskilde is a city of deep historical roots and resilient cultural heritage. To foreign eyes, the city is a trove of the years of yore. To the local, the city is his heart as it is his identity, and as evidenced by the city’s edifices and landscape, this is a town that is proud of its past.
