GUARULHOS, BRAZIL

Brazil is an interesting country, with a diverse culture.  Guarulhos, Brazil is the second largest city in the Brazilian state of San Paulo.  The name Guarulhos is derived from the Tupi language and means eaters, or big bellied people, referring to the original inhabitants of the area. 

Guarulhos is right next to San Paulo, one of the most cosmopolitan of all the Brazilian cities.  For the nightlife, almost all visitors go to San Paulo to expeience the wide array of dance clubs and bars.  It is host to a never ending array of nightlife, with over a thousand restaurants, clubs, and pubs.  Most clubs open very late in the evening, usually around 11 p.m., and stay open well into dawn.  Make sure you rest up before a night on the town in this beautiful area of Brazil.

Dancing is a favored pastime in most Brazilian cities.  Salsa and meringue are most often found in the clubs and bars, with Latin and American pop as the favored music.

 The Bosque Maia Botanic Garden is a point of interest in this industrial city, as well as a large shopping mall.  Just a short distance from the Botanical Gardens, this shopping mall is one of the high points of Guarulhos. 

The mall houses a large variety of shops, with something for everyone.   When in Brazil, remember that cheek kissing is very common.  While it won’t be rude, trying to shake hands when someone is offering a kiss may be considered odd.  Nearly everyone can dance and Brazilians are very at ease with their bodies.  Normally, they stand closer than Europeans or Americans, and have a tendency to touch more frequently.  Most will touch an arm or shoulder during a conversation and tourists should not be offended at this show of familiarity.
