Algiers Sights and Landmarks Guide, Algeria

When in Algiers, the destinations to visit, the sights to behold and the grandeur to marvel can become endless. In a city as historical as this, the obvious influences of its colonizers can be found almost everywhere: in the architecture of the ancient buildings, in the food served on the streets and restaurants and overall in the culture and heritage as depicted by the people.

There is no denying that once in history the city of Algiers became a melting pot of races and a witness to intermarriages among races. The evidence of these can still be found lurking in almost every corner of the city’s streets.

When in Algiers, the word Casbah often comes to mind especially when other tourists as well as locals talk about. It is an Arabic word that means citadel as it is the part of the city that has seen the most historical and cultural milestones. In fact, because of its importance it has been included in the list of UNESCO’s heritage sites for culture in 1992. It is still home to a good number of ancient buildings. These are the building included in the list:  mosque El Kébir - the oldest mosque, Ketchaoua mosque built in 1794 and mosque el Djedid built in 1660.

Several monuments can also be found in this historical city. The most popular is the Monument des Martyrs or the Maquam E' chahid. It is an iconic concrete monument that shelters the Eternal Flame commemorating the Algerian war for independence. The monument was opened in 1982 just in time for the twentieth anniversary of Algerian liberation.

Another popular destination is the Notre Dame d'Afrique or Our Lady of Africa. Only accessible by one cable car, it is one of city’s most outstanding monuments with a Basilica where the monument got its name. Le Grand Poste is probably the most beautiful post office on this side of Africa built by the French in 1913 in neo-Moorish style right in the very heart of Algiers.

In a city that never ceases to amaze its visitors, who could ever go wrong when heading to this capital city of Algeria? Listed above are only a few of the never-ending wonders and the next to go agape at its glory could be you!
