On April 26, 1945 the city finally tasted freedom with the joint efforts of the U.S. Army and the Filipino guerrillas against the Japanese. The Japanese were left with no choice but to leave the island. On June 15, 1948 by virtue of Republic Act Number 327, the city of Dumaguete was born.
