Panama City Sights and Landmarks Guide, Panama

Panama City is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Panama. Not only is Panama City the country’s capital, it is also a historic place with many areas to visit.

The city is divided into three regions: the old city and the colonial city – places where the first colonizers settled and transferred to because of numerous pirate problems and worsened health conditions; and the new city where most businesses and nightlife activities are found. Parts of the old city and the colonial city are already a UNESCO World Heritage because of its historical value and the excellent preservation of the government and private companies involved in the project.

No visit to Panama is complete without the Panama Canal. Known around the world because of its importance to the shipping industry and worldwide economy, the Panama Canal also holds a distinct history that often fascinates tourists. Although geographically located in Panama, it only became the country’s property in 2000 after it was handed over by the US Government since it was build. A taxi could take you there. Ask the taxi driver to take you to Miraflores Locks (one of the areas in the Canal) for a great view of the area. Prepare an entrance fee to gain entrance to the locks and another fee for their museum.

Aside from the historic areas of Panama City as well as the Panama Canal, there are natural beauties hidden in the city. The Metropolitan National Park is a well known tourist area because of the unique flora and fauna as well as different species which should be entertaining for everyone.

Traveling around Panama City is very easy but only limited to one mode – taxi. Although there are no meters, there are government mandated rules and restrictions on how much you have to pay. There are specific fees per zone which is very reasonable. The taxi could take you to almost any place anytime.

As most countries are coping up with the challenges of the improving country, security is not to be expected. But that doesn’t mean it is dangerous to be in Panama City – you just have to watch out for yourself and avoid running into places you are not familiar with. The best way to be secured in the city is to travel with a companion or a group. Even during the day, going to places you are not familiar with could be very dangerous.
