The city is comprised of various institutions such as the city council, mayor and other governmental organizations. Take a glimpse of Kumanovo History through the following guide.

Kumanovo History – Prehistoric Times

The region where the city is located takes pride in a number of prehistoric communities including the Kostoperska karpa. The Gradiste settled in the area during the Bronze Age, the Mlado Nagorichane settled during the Neolithic Era, and the Grobjle settled during the Iron Age.

Kumanovo History – The Early History

The city of Kumanovo was first cited in a 1519 document found in Istanbul’s Turkish archive. However, it was in Evlya Celebi’s account in the 1660s that people would learn more complete and pertinent information about the city. According to the document, Kumanovo is a county located in the Skopje Region.

The city had grown into an urban community and the governmental capital of the region between the last years of the 16th century and the early 17th century. The city suffered developmental stagnation after the Karposh Uprising, which occurred in 1689.

Kumanovo History – Karposh Rebellion

Karposh, according to the Turkish historian Aga, worked as a vojvod in the nearby Dospat, where the existing Bulgaria is located. However, afterwards, he was appointed by the Turks to be the head of Christian auxiliary forces in the regions flanked by Dojran, Kjustendil, Sofia, Nevrokop, and Veles. When the Ottoman Empire started to decline, Karposh saw this as an opportunity to spark an uprising. Later, this event, with the help of the Austrian Army, led to the liberation of cities and municipalities such as Kumanovo, Skopje, and Stip.

Shortly after, significant change in the political and military state became evident in the Balkans. This had a critical outcome on the Karposh Rebellion. The Austrian Army was compelled to leave and the Turkish military showed aggression towards the rebels. The Turks successfully attacked Kumanovo along with other significant cities. Karposh was arrested and was executed.

Kumanovo History – The Balkan War

During the first Balkan War, specifically in October of 1912, General Radomir Putnik and the Serbian military won their battle against the Ottomans. There was a battle in Kumanovo for two days and this culminated with the end of Ottoman power in Vardar, Macedonia.

Kumanovo History – Second World War

On 11 October 1941, Kumanovo became one of the two cities in Macedonia to start the anti-fascist uprising. The rebellion was victorious and the Macedonian federative state was established. After the war, Kumanovo had gone through great administrative, economic, and cultural progress.
