Sydney Sights and Landmarks Guide, Australia
Sydney is a beautiful city, the capital of an equally beautiful country with all its beaches and interesting tourist spots. If you are planning on a holiday to Australia, you should definitely check out the capital before moving on to the other parts of the continent. There are still a lot of places that you can visit in Australia for both the sights fanatic and the history enthusiast in you.
Hyde Park barracks, Sydney
This is the Australian version of the similarly named structure in London. This could be because Australia was once a colony of England. The barracks was designed by Francis Greenway, a well-known architect of his time. Greenway designed the barracks to provide housing to male convicts. These convicts were sent to Australia to work for the government in the Sydney area. The barracks operated this way until 1848, when it was closed down as a convict house.
In contrast to its earlier role, the barracks became home to functions that catered to females. At first, it was an immigration depot for female immigrants to Australia. Next, it was an asylum with an all-female population. It also served as a law court and government office for almost a century until it became a museum. The museum is a testimony to the barracks’ dark past and original function.
Art gallery of New South Wales
The Art Gallery of New South Wales is not only home to some of the finest art pieces from all over the world. It is also home to exhibits that you can’t find anywhere else but in Australia. These exhibits include one showing the 200-year colonial history of Australia. This exhibit will show you how Australia evolved from being a settlement to a full-fledged country. Moreover, it shows artwork by noted artists like Grace Cossington Smith, Sidney Nolan, Russell Drysdale, and many others.
It also has the Yiribana gallery, which shows art done by aborigine artists. Besides that, the gallery houses a huge number of art collections of Asian and European origin. Notable photographs from all over the world are also viewable in the Art Gallery of New South Wales.
These are just two of the attractions in Sydney. Capitals are always the most interesting parts to visit in a country. So, if you’re in Sydney for the holiday, don’t forget to check these two places and a lot more before you leave. It will be something you won’t regret.
