Art is never cheap, and if it’s good art we’re talking about, you probably have to pay a lot to see it. Or maybe not? When you are going traveling, it’s only natural to save some money for entry fees to museums, galleries, historical sites and other attractions.
And while some galleries will not let you off the hook too easily, there are several museums where you can admire all the art you want – for free, because that’s how the best things in life are. So here are the top 10 free art galleries that you should visit during your travels.
1. The British Museum, London
The British Museum can sound rather intimidating considering its size and diversity, but surprisingly enough, it is free. In addition to art galleries, there are tons of other displays to see, and you can very well spend quite a few afternoons exploring all of it.
2. Tate Modern, London
For modern art afficionados who are visiting London, this is one of the first things you have got to visit. Some of the finest works of modern art in the world are housed in this museum.
3. Bronx Museum of the Arts, New York
There are several free galleries in New York, but this one is one of the most interesting ones. The museum focuses on contemporary and 20th century American art, but usually there are temporary exhibitions from other countries too.
4. The Pucker Gallery, Boston
The entry fee to some of the larger galleries and museums in Boston can be a bit steep, but there is a nice selection of smaller (but just as exciting) galleries that you can visit for free. The Pucker Gallery hosts an eclectic collection of contemporary art produced by artists from all over the world.
5. Musée de la Vie Romantique, Paris
Entry to the Louvre, Musee d’Orsay or Centre Pompidou is quite expensive, but fortunately the French government subsidizes galleries to host regular free entry days. Also, there are several galleries and museums that offer free entry, like the Musée de la Vie Romantique, which offers a fascinating foray into Romantic art.
6. Museo Municipal de Arte Contemporáneo, Madrid
If you are in the mood for some great Spanish contemporary art, this is the best place to see it in its full splendor. Paintings, sculptures and drawings by prominent artists from Madrid.
7. The Museum of Applied Arts, Vienna
Not a free museum per se, but then again, in Vienna not many things are free. But on each Saturday, there’s free entry to the Museum of Applied Arts, where you can see some of the best contemporary art in Austria.
