Overview of Sacueni (Szekelyhid in Hungarian and Zickelhid in German)

Sacueni is a small village in Bihor near the capital of the County, Oradea (42 km). Eldest archaeological findings of the city date back to 1700 BC and it wears the name of Ox Castle („Ökörvár”); beside that one of the eldest gaelic grave from Romania was also found here. From the 9th century this land became the base of the Hungarian tribes from the zone, especially for the armed Secuis (Székely in Hungarian). The second part of the Hungarian name of the city, „híd” means „bridge” and most probable it denotes the historical fact that Seciu people had the right to charge a tax from the merchants going from North to South for passing the bridge on “Ér” river.

If you are crossing the border at Létavértes (what is by the way the sister city of Sacueni) you should take a short break at Sacueni to visit the three churches of the town (catholic, protestant and ortodox). Unfortunetally the old fortress of the city was already demolished but there is a very nice mock-up of it in the garden of Protestant church (check the gallery).

My advice is to visit the city in the night, I really enjoyed walking the empty streets and taking pictures of the buildings and churches.

Recommended Drobeta-turnu Severin Guide

Drobeta-turnu Severin History

In March 1833, the general Pavel Kiseleff visited the ruins of the old fortification and decided to build there the trade city Turnu Severin. If Trajan used Drobeta to conquer Dacia, in 1866 emperor Carol of Romania used this town as an important military point in Romania’s Independence War. Being inhabited by almost 85 % foreigners (Austrians, Germans, Italians, Bulgarians, Hungarians, French etc) the city benefited from their advanced views and flourished. By 1900, they had built the National Road, the railways, the Carol and Elisabeth avenues, the shipyard (which by 1914 had become the largest in the country), the Municipal Palace, 3...
