Cluj Turned out to be quite different from what I had remembered. The city is much larger than Oradea and there is much more going on. You can go out every night of the week and you'll see lots of students. During the day while visiting the old town, one can only imagine the lost beauty of this flourishing city. 50 years of communism have taken their toll though just like in any other city in the East.

It's also interesting to note that the best renovated houses are bars and clubs. I guess all those young people working in Spain, Italy, France and Portugal bring the money back home and spend it on parties, food and cars. Of course Cluj is also a student town, so that's additional demand. Diesel is a bar I went to the second night there and I would say that it's in my top 5 best done bars in the world.
My accountant told me to also check out Bamboo Club or Obsession. I only had time for Bamboo and ended up going there with my SEO guy from Cluj. Lucky us, they had a quite naughty show on that night, sorry can't post the pics of all the druling guys.

Ok back to the real Cluj :) I was a bit sad that the city's main square was being renovated, I'll have to go back and see it once it has been completed.

Probably the most interesting moment for me in Cluj was checking out the church my grandpa got married back in 1935. Can you imagine that??? 1935 - wow wow wow :) The guy was sitting there almost 3/4 of a century ago and got married - very cool. Anyhow, hanging out with my grandfather was nice and he could tell me a little about the pre-communism Cluj and lots of nice family stories. We also took care of some business for him before I left Cluj to finally go to my office in Oradea, which I will tell you about next time.

Cluj-napoca History

After World War I, Cluj-Napoca, together with the entire Principality of Transylvania, became a part of Romania: the Romanian government continued the work of the Austrian monarchy, building numerous churches, schools and cultural institutions. After the communist period, when Cluj was given its actual name ‘Cluj-Napoca’ and grew massively as a result of the forced urbanization (which also influenced the ethnic structure of the city, as Romanians became the majority) Cluj-Napoca entered a new period of development and modernization. Now, at the beginning of a new millennium, Cluj-Napoca is a prestigious academic centre, a leader... Read more »
