Mississippi Travel: General Information

The name of this Southern US state is derived from the “Mississippi River” that flows along the Western boundary of the state. This name was taken from the Native American “Ojibwe” word – Misi-ziibi that means “Great River”. Heavily forested with splendid terrain, the state boasts not only big rivers but major lakes and beautiful bays along the coastline. Also known for its music, literature and various forms of art, the region is definitely worth a visit.

· Jackson: This is the capital and most populated city in the state. Known as “the City with Soul” it has been named after President Andrew Jackson. Famous for music that includes blues, Gospel and R&B; it is home to many famous musicians. Downtown attractions include The Alamo Theatre, The Oaks House Museum, Mississippi Fairgrounds and Coliseum and the Smith Park. The Jackson Zoo has always been a delight for adults and children for more than four decades! Apart from the various species of animals, one can also enjoy the Endangered Species Carousel and the African Savannah exhibit.

· Hattiesburg: This is in Forrest County and is nicknamed “The Hub City”. Its diversity of the economy, great location and strong neighborhoods has added to the attraction of the town. Home to the William Carey University and The University of Southern Mississippi and numerous schools and colleges, this state also has the biggest National Guard training base. An interesting fact about this cheerful town is that it is the birthplace of “rock and roll”.

Mississippi Travel: Economy and Infrastructure

The state’s living costs and per capita personal earnings are the lowest in the US. Despite this, the Mississippians are the best in making charitable contributions, which says a lot about them! Casino gambling along the Mississippi and Gulf Coast was legalized in 1990 leading to economic gains. However due to Hurricane Katrina several coastal casinos were destroyed. Native American tribes have established casinos on reservations that yield revenue to support economic and educational development.

Industrialization in many areas of the state came late due to the domination of plantations and production of cotton for agricultural uses only. Earlier, Mississippi was slow to invest in public schools railroads and roads. It was only later that cotton farmers began to have large plantations. As far as transportation goes, road, water and rail services are provided throughout the state.

Mississippi Travel: Culture

While this state is mostly known for its literature and music, its religious traditions have been awe inspiring. Its people have a deep love for the traditions and values inherited down the ages. The USA International Ballet Competition is held in Jackson every four years and attracts talented dancers from all over the world. Development of the “blues” and “country music” played a significant role in Mississippi’s musical legacy.
