Roma Travel Guide, Australia

Roma, Queensland Australia – Overview

Roma is a relatively small town in Queensland (population 7,000) but a very scenic area of the region. Even with the population, the town covers a vast area which has attracted tourists from different parts of the country. Roma is accessible by car but considering that it’s more than 500kms away from Brisbane, the train is the best way to get into this place. Don’t be intimidated with the vastness of area; the town is relatively small because of its population so visiting key areas of the town is very easy.

The town is an agricultural area. If you’re looking for a serene surrounding, never hesitate to visit Roma. Since its establishment during the 1800s, the town continues to be purely an agricultural area. The increase of population is even very slow. When Roma officially became a municipality, the population was no little more than 1,000. From wheat to beef, you can see hundreds of acres of pastures as well as lands dedicated to a single crop could be seen from afar.

Roma is also a major source of energy for the region. The town contributes greatly to natural gas and oil supply which has contributed to the rise of employment.

Even though Roma is a relatively small town, there are certain structures that should not be missed. Visit the Big Rig Complex where you can visit the information center. The structure was built as commemoration to the oil and gas industry which started early in 1900s. The Romavilla Winery should not be missed as well. Aside from being a popular winery in the region, it’s also one of the oldest – the winery has been open for business since 1863. The Meadowbank Museum is also a recommended tourist destination as it chronicles the early lives of the locals as well as their current lifestyle. Although you have to get in touch with the operators of the museum in advance since the museum could be closed especially when the operators are at the farm.

Because of the increasing popularity of Roma, various hotels and hostels have been established. There are also motels that could be budget friendly and highly recommended for those who wanted to stay there a little bit longer. Camping in different areas in town is also common which is even better to the budget. The Meadowbank Museum is a popular spot for tourists who wanted to camp for a night or two.
