Brioude is a perfect example of everything you would expect from the French countryside. People are kind, everything is calm and there are a lot of bars. If you stay in the center of the town, you can reach everything important very easily in a couple of minutes on foot.
They have some cheese and wine that is specific for the region. These are very tasty and you can buy them relatively cheap in the supermarket as well.
Also don't miss the Cathedral St. Julien, it is in the center of Brioude and it's amazingly beautiful.
