Changing the Guard at Buckingham Palace one of the best free activities in London. It takes place at the courtyard of the Palace at 11:30, but you should arrive there early to get a good view. There are some ceremonial days when there is no Guard Mounting and also when it's a very rainy day.
If you want a picture with a guard, you have to walk down next to the courtyard and turn at the corner to Pall Mall, here is a guard standing alone. You can stay next to him and just make a photo.
He will probably not give any sign of life, but that's the greatest in it. :D

Address:
Buckingham Palace London, SW1A 1AA

Price:
Both the watching and the picture with the guard are free.

Opening Hours:
The Change is at 11:30 every day during spring and summer and every other day in fall and winter.

How to get there:
The nearest tube station is Victoria, Green Park and Hyde Park Corner.
