Montevideo is a very prestigious city for Uruguay due to the three feathers it has on its cap. Montevideo happens to be the chief port of Uruguay, the capital of Uruguay, and the largest city of Uruguay. Montevideo happens to be the only city of Uruguay which has a population of more than 1,000,000 inhabitants. The most important harbor of the Americas is also part of Montevideo. As per the research done by Mercer Human Resource Consulting, Montevideo has the best living standard when compared to all the cities of Latin America.

Montevideo lies in the south of Uruguay. The city’s most important point is 18 de Julio which starts from Plaza Independencia (which happens to be the meeting point of the rest of the city with Ciudad Vieja, the historical quarter) and ends on the boundary which lies between Parque Batlle and Cordón. Some famous beaches that are important tourist attraction are: Malvín, Playa Verde, Carrasco, Punta Gorda, Playa de los Ingleses, Buceo, and Pocitos.

The original name of Montevideo is San Felipe y Santiago de Montevideo but only Montevideo is used, as the original name is too lengthy. Ricardo Ehrlich has been the Mayor of the city (also called as Intendente Municipal in Spanish). He has been the Mayor since 2005 and gained over 60 percent votes in the elections against Pedro Bordaberry, who got only 27 percent votes.

Montevideo had a population of around 38000 inhabitants in 1860 which jumped to around 110000 inhabitants in 1884 due to many inhabitants who entered the city to make some money and to utilize the growing economy of the lavish city. Currently the population of Montevideo has moved to 1350000 inhabitants approximately and the population of metropolitan area of Montevideo is over 1814000. An economic stagnation and military dictatorship affected the economical growth of the city. This happened during the mid 20th century and its effects are still visible in Montevideo’s economical graph.

Spanish and Italian descendants are the most common migrants in the city. Other European entries are also found regularly in this city. There is a minority of Jews in the city. Similarly, a minority of Africans is also found in the city.

Montevideo is so huge in terms of population that around 44 percent of total population of Uruguay is located in Montevideo itself. The surrounding regions of Montevideo have another 12 percent of the country’s population.
