Jersey City History, New Jersey

Understanding the history of Jersey City

Jersey City is a beautiful tourist destination in New Jersey, United States and is also the second largest city in the entire state.

The land which is now called as the Jersey City was earlier inhabited by Lenape, the set of tribes. In the year 1609, Henry Hudson, trying to find an alternative route for East Asia sailed his tiny vessel at Harsimus, Weehawken Cove and Sandy Hook. After spending a few days surveying the region and meeting the inhabitants, Hudson then returned back to Netherlands. A house was contrasted at the Communipaw, the region adjacent to the current Liberty State Park. Soon after, one more house was specially constructed at the Harsimus Cove and then became the very home of the Cornelius Van Vorst.

Amongst the oldest houses in this city, the stone Van Vorst takes the number one position. At the time of American Revolutionary War, the region was under the rule of British. After this war, Alexander Hamilton along with various other New Jerseyeans and New Yorkers tried to develop the region that would be the downtown Jersey City. During the period of 19th century, this city played a truly important part in Underground Railroad. Soon four routes via New Jersey congregated in this city.

This city was also a manufacturing town and dock for a huge part of the 19th as well as 20th centuries. Just like the New York City, this destination has been a true landing pad to new immigrants for the United States. In its zenith before the Second World War that the Italian, Irish and German immigrants got work at the Chloro and Colgate. But, the biggest number of employers at that specific time was railroads, whose networks ended on Hudson River.

Pennsylvania Railroad Company is the most brilliant railroad for this city whose east terminus lied in the downtown region till the year 1911, when this company constructed the very first tunnel. The explosion of Black Tom took place in the year 1916 due to an action of the sabotage on the American bomb supplies by some German agents in order to stop the material to be used in the First World War by Allies.
