New Brunswick Travel Guide

New Brunswick is part of the three maritime provinces of Canada, whose capital is Fredericton. It is surrounded by water, being the only bilingual province, from a constitutional point of view.

New Brunswick -Geography

One-third of the province is covered by the Maritime Plain, with elevations reaching only 152 m, in its undulating parts. New Brunswick Highlands is a mountainous region whose average height is around 520m, and its highest peak is Mount Charlton 820m, in the north. The soil mostly consists of sedimentary and granitic rocks.

The province is studded with rivers and streams which rise from the highlands. The Maritime Plain is crossed by Miramichi River, which together with Chaleur Bay make one of the main rivers of New Brunswick, Restigouche. The greatest lake is Grand Lake, being also the most important natural one.

If travelers are interested in finding out more about the province’s past and heritage, then they are advised to visit The New Brunswick Museum, which is located in St. John and it is the oldest Canadian museum dating since 1842.

Sand dunes, lagoons, asters’ colonies, salt marshes and barrier islands can all be seen if visiting Kouchibouguac National Park, which stretches on the east coast, not far from the town of Richibucto. The park havens the second largest tern colony in North America. Visitors may relax in the park swimming, fishing or engaging in river adventures.

The Museum of the Fur Trade in Chadron tells the history of the Spanish, French and English fur traders. It also depicts the hard days and the challenges the first immigrants had to face.

The Strategic Air and Space Museum in Ashland contains aircrafts and missiles and a Korean War exhibition which reminds of the war weapons used in the past.

New Brunswick has a continental climate with warm summers and cold winters. The lowest temperature was registered at Sission Dam and it was -42˚C, while the highest was 39.4˚C, at Nepisiguit Falls. The Bay of Fundy coast is foggy during springs and summers.

The official languages in New Brunswick are English and French. Visitors should know that there are about 60 Municipal Information Centers around the province where they can receive data from experts. There are various free services like: professional travel assistance, tourism publication and a free map.

The currency of New Brunswick is the Canadian Dollar. Americans, New Zealanders, Irish, Australians and British people need only a passport and no visa if they intend to stay only for six months. The others need a visa if they want to visit New Brunswick.

New Brunswick -Flora and Fauna

50% of the territory is covered by deciduous and coniferous forests. The most common trees in the forest are: ash tree, maple, linden, oak, fir, pine and larch. New Brunswick is well known for its black and brown bears, of which the grizzly bear is the most important. In the depth of the forests you can see red deer, moose, wolves and foxes.

New Brunswick -Transport

Visitors can move around in New Brunswick by train, by car, by ferry or by bus. There is a rail network that runs across from Vancouver to Halifax. Those who want to visit New Brunswick ought to know that this province has four airports. Visitors who want to travel by ferry have a range of seven possibilities out of which they can choose the most suitable.

Beach House Bed&Breakfast is a countryside home located on the Kingston Peninsula. It is highly recommended for those visitors who want to spend a peaceful time in the beautiful Kingston Creek. Here one can enjoy long walks or cycle along the quiet streets.

Visitors may spend here romantic evenings watching the sunset with their loved ones. One of the most common possibilities of spending one’s time in this area is fishing.

New BrunswickCuisine

Many of the traditional dishes contain potatoes cooked in different ways.

Poutines rapees is a traditional dish made of raw grated potatoes, cooked potatoes and salty pork. This mixture is ball-shaped and it is served with molasses or brown sugar. Anther dish that contains potatoes is Fricot a la Poule, which is made of chicken, dumplings and potatoes.

For desert visitors may taste the Maple Pecan Pie, which contains the famous and tasty maple syrup obtained from the maple trees that are found in this area.
