Kalamazoo History – The Name

The name given to this wonderful place is deeply rooted in a Native American origin though it is not yet clear as how the name was derived. It is oftentimes referred to as a place with different meanings to its name – some say Kalamazoo means the mirage of reflecting river while others are heard of speaking about its association with boiling water. With a very intriguing name, a lot of people become interested in the place even adding it up to artistic works and songs in history. One of the most remembered masterpieces is I’ve Got a Gal in Kalamazoo by Glen Miller.

Aside from the above-mentioned remarks given to the city, Kalamazoo is also referred to as the “Celery City”, the “Paper City” and the “Mall City”. It was called as the Celery City after the crop grew vastly in the fields found all over town. Being tagged as the Paper City, Kalamazoo is famous for paper and cardboard factories or warehouses. As The Mall City, the town was known to be the first one that founded a shopping mall on the streets of the United States of America.

Kalamazoo History – The Early Settlers

Kalamazoo’s first inhabitants are known as the Moundbuilders. This tribe belongs to the Native Americans whose main subsistence depends upon agriculture or farming. As a tribute to these settlers, the people have ended up with tourist destinations such as the Bronson Park. The most distinguished part of the park, which is commemorative of the Moundbuilders, is the Indian Mountain on its southern part.

The early settlers were replaced by other inhabitants coming from different parts of the country and the world as well. Other Native Americans were said to have left traces in Kalamazoo History. The most relevant groups tracked by historians to have occupied the place were the Sioux, Mascoutin and Miami. Before it became Kalamazoo County, it was a residence to the Pottawatomi Tribe. Back then, the white race arrived in the area as well.

Kalamazoo History – A Look at the Present Situation

As the place become relatively important to Michigan, industry and commerce grew affluently in the area. There were many developments made to the town including transportation, culture and education. Several interesting places are also found in Kalamazoo making it a hot spot for tourists. Some of these favored tourist attractions are Kalamazoo Mall, Stuart Avenue, South Street, Vine Historic Districts and The Frank Lloyd Wright Homes.
