Durango Travel Guide, Colorado

Durango Mountain Resort is set at only 25 miles north of Durango, a railroad town at its origins, known as a route for transporting precious metals from high-country mines. The railroad remains one of the biggest attractions in Durango as people come here to take a journey back in time with the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad.

Of course the main reason for coming here is the Purgatory ski resort where you can get more sunshine than any other Colorado resort. It opened in 1965 and ever since has attracted numerous tourists to the area that either choose to make Durango their base camp for exploring the area or look for accommodation at the ski resort. Even if you choose to stay in the city there are plenty of opportunities to be in the middle of nature as there are about 20 parks throughout the city with facilities like free tennis courts and picnic areas and if you get some bad weather there’s the Durango Community Recreation Center to offer you the possibility to keep fit by going to the indoor swimming pool, climbing wall, lifting weights and other activities.

Anywhere you choose to stay you are sure to get numerous opportunities for outdoor activities of all kinds including hiking, mountain biking, river rafting, fishing, and above all winter sports.

There are few places in the world that can compare to the beauty and alpine splendor of Purgatory at Durango Mountain Resort. The resort is usually open from Thanksgiving to early April.

With Purgatory Village in the middle you will have easy access to the slopes and epic views of the San Juan Mountains. It is a pleasant and picturesque little village with a laid-back friendly atmosphere featuring quaint shops, a variety of lodging options, condominiums, conference services, skier services, several restaurants and taverns, and equipment rentals, a multitude of activities and events providing plenty of wintertime fun for the whole season.

This resort is unique in its own. One thing that sets it apart from the other resorts is the fact that it beautifully combines sun ad snow. Who wouldn’t want to spend his time in a winter resort knowing that beautiful sunshine will accompany his vacation? There are some who when thinking of winter resorts automatically thinks of the possibility of a cloudy sky and strong wind, but here is the place where the chances of bad weather are thin. What more could you possibly want to make you come here? Oh, yes probably you would want to know about the scenery. It is at its best! True Colorado Rocky Mountain beauty awaits you with memorable scenery of the Rockies. And the rest comes naturally.

There are perfect snow conditions with an average annual snowfall of 260 inches, 1,200 acres of skiable terrain, 11 lifts and 85 trails. There are slopes for every level, but the intermediate skiers have the most trails. Nordic skiers are not left out; the Durango Nordic Center has 16km of trails for them. Snowboarders are also welcome on all lifts and trails.

The resort is also perfect for groups and families who can get here a perfect vacation, great family winter fun and beautiful memories. One of the nicest things is that they offer the possibility of time spent together with your loved ones so you can spend your time on the slopes having fun learning to ski together with the family ski lessons.

After you have been on the slopes and enjoyed all the activities provided, you have taken in all the fun you can put the cherry on the top of the cake by soaking up some sun and scenery in a “beach” chair and enjoy the splendors of Durango Mountain Resort.
