Cleveland, OH US - History

 One of the Best Cities to Live in the United States Cleveland is a city located in the State of Ohio, US, and is considered to be the 33rd largest city in the country. Cleveland is situated nearly 60 miles westwards from the Pennsylvania border and near the southern shore of the Erie Lake.

The city was founded in 1796 near the Cuyahoga River, as it became an important manufacturing centre due to its location at the convergence of many railroad lines and canals.  

Cleveland’s Nickname

The residents of the city are nicknamed as “Clevelanders” while the city is nicknamed as “The Cleve”, “The Forest City”, and “The Metropolis of the Western Reserve”, “The Land”, “The New American City” and “the Sixth City”.

 How Cleveland got its name?

The City of Cleveland obtained its name on July 22, 1976. The naming of the city took place after the surveyors of the Connection Land Company started laying out Western Reserve of Connecticut into townships. It was during this time when they named “Cleveland”, their capital city after General Moses Cleveland, their leader. The first man to settle in the city was Lorenzo Carter. He built his own cabin on the banks of the River Cuyahoga. On December 23, 1814, the village of Cleveland got incorporated whereas the spelling of the name of the city was then changed to “Cleveland” in 1831.

  Impact of Transport on Cleveland History

The city of Cleveland experienced rapid growth after the completion of the important Ohio and Erie Canal in 1832. This canal served as a key link between the Great Lakes and the Ohio River. It also connected Cleveland to the Gulf of Mexico via River Mississippi and the Atlantic Ocean via St. Lawrence Seaway. After the addition of railroad links, Cleveland had a much more rapid growth, as it was incorporated as a city in the year of 1836. 

Cleveland after World War II

Cleveland experienced a real boom immediately after the World War II. The business opportunities flourished as the city was termed as the “best location of the nation”. The population of the country was quick to reach its peak of nearly 914,808 and Cleveland was named as the All America City in 1949 for the first time.  The city also witnessed racial unrest like other cities of America, as it experienced the Hough Riots (18th July 1966- 23rd July 1966) and the Shootout of Glenville (23rd July 1968- 25th July 1968). A notorious fire broke out on River Cuyahoga adding to the financial difficulties of the city in 1969. Cleveland was also identified as the emerging global city in 1999.
