Charlotte, NC - Sights
There are so many sights that you can see when you visit the city of Charlotte that you will not be able to do it all. They have several historic sites and museums that are scattered all over the place, especially around Uptown.
The Mint Museum of Art is the main museum of art, and it is located in the Charlotte Mint building. Although it lacks a permanent collection, the museum hosts regular traveling exhibits of high quality from all around the world. The primary strengths of the Mint Museum of Art are American ceramics and art, costumes and more decorative art from several countries, and pre-colonial and colonial art. It is definitely worth a visit, costing 6 dollars for adults, 5 dollars for college students and seniors, 3 dollars for children from 6 to 17 years old, and free for kids under 5 years of age.
The Discovery Place is a very popular place to visit in Charlotte, and many of the schools in nearby cities take field trips here. It is one the most acclaimed museums for children in the nation and primarily focuses on science. You can step into a rainforest, feel and see fish, see a frozen banana hammer, and watch a balloon filled with hydrogen explode. The cost is $7.50 to see the Discovery Halls, $7.50 to see the OMNIMAX, and $13 to see both.
The Levine Museum of the New South is another museum that is worth visiting, giving a great introduction for the history and influences of the South over the last centuries. It boasts an excellent exhibit with hands-on experiences and walk-through. This is a wonderful museum for both new Southerners and old Southerners. It costs 6 dollars for adults, 5 dollars for minors and seniors, free for kids under 6 years old, and 17 dollars for the family. It is also good to note that it is closed on Mondays.
A very interesting place for the kids who love airplanes, as well as adults, is the Carolinas Aviation Museum. This is a great museum that features a variety of resources that include restored and historic aircrafts, a library, and air shows. This is the city's only attraction that can be accessible by an airplane since it is positioned at the Charlotte-Douglas International Airport. Tuesdays and Thursdays are open for people to talk to the workers who restore the planes.
