Architecture
Tall and modish buildings define the Evansville skyline; but these tall structures are punctuated by structures that stand testimony to architectural styles of bygone times.
The Angel Mounds State Historic Site preserves remnants of Native American culture and architecture. The Evansville Museum of Arts, History and Science (with the Koch Planetarium standing within its walls) is another important structure and also Evansville's only Victorian House Museum- the Reitz Home Museum. Apart from the museums, Evansville has a few noteworthy auditoriums and theaters. Other important structures are the Four Freedoms Monument along the Ohio River and the Tiered Stadium in the downtown riverfront area.
Economy and Infrastructure
Being the regional center of the Illinois-Indiana-Kentucky Tri-State Industrial Area, Evansville has a stable and diverse economy. Important industries include finance and business services, manufacturing, warehousing and distribution, retailing, etc. The 1995-event that further boosted Evansville’s economy was the inauguration of the first riverboat casino entertainment facility, Casino Aztar.
As for education facilities, Evansville follows the nationally recognized public school system of elementary, middle-school and high-school education.
Evansville has a full-proof transportation system and one can use the roadways or the railways, the waterways or the air-route.
People and Culture
A community of Native Americans, people of the Middle Mississippian culture, inhabited a part of the present city of Evansville (the site is known as Angel Mounds State Historic Site). Thereafter, the region has seen many settlements and today the city has a truly cosmopolitan culture. People are broad-minded and take keen interest in fine arts and various performing arts. The city has many locally popular bands and professional theater groups. Plays, performances by pop groups, ballet and modern dance groups are held year-round in different halls in the area.
One of the main attractions of the town is the West Side Nut Club Fall Festival. It is basically street fair and peculiar delicacies are served here – you will get anything and everything right from alligator stew to brain sandwiches and chocolate covered cricket balls. The Evansville Freedom Festival held every year in July is a firework extravaganza.
