San Jose, California - History
San Jose, California was established in 1777 as Pueblo de San Jose. Before its establishment, the city used to be inhabited by the Ohlones - a distinct collection of different Native American tribes. San Jose used to be a predominantly agricultural area as the Ohlones tilled the land and stayed in the seashore. San Jose was declared as a town through the efforts of José Joaquin Moraga and the town immediately became an important agricultural land because of its proximity to different forts in San Francisco and Monterey. San Jose became the source of food for different forts which has significantly boosted its economy.
The town even improved significantly when California became part of United States. The town became the capital of California in 1849 to 1851. Their role of the town as the capital became short lived because of the town's inability to handle the influx of people. But even when they lost their distinction, San Jose improved as an agricultural town. Different facilities related to crop preparation and even canning were put up during the later part of the 19th century. This trend continued until the early 20th century.
San Jose eventually concentrated on other industries but became successful through different government funding as they established different corporations for military and aerospace purposes. This rapid change happened after World War II as the country flourished significantly. Cities in California, including San Jose, expanded their territory as their population exploded. Unfortunately, the city experienced massive losses as federal funding was cut off for different companies during the late 80s.
But this loss is just a way of establishing something new and fit for the future. Because of its popular universities, the city slowly became the hotbed of technology. Tech companies from different parts of the country started to open their offices in San Jose. It was during the 90s that the city became the world's Silicon Valley. The reputation continues until today as San Jose has not only attracted tech companies from different parts of the globe it has also attracted brilliant minds in technology who are seeking work.
Today, San Jose is one of the most popular cities not only in California but in US. As the world's first Silicon Valley, San Jose became the leader in technological innovations especially on the internet. From a simple agricultural town run by Ohlone Native Americans to a progressive Silicon Valley, San Jose continues to improve significantly through technology.
