Stornoway, UK - Overview: A town of dreams

Stornoway is the largest town in Outer Hebrides, Scotland. The town is populated with over 8,000 people, which is around 30% of the total population of the Western Isles. The fabulous harbour and marine makes the town spectacular and beautiful. The churches are quite significant in this town and everything is closed on Sunday. City following the First World War

After the First World War, the conditions of the industries became worse in Stornoway. Even after the end of the war, when men returned, the market didn’t flourish. The development of the town in the medieval period was urged by the construction of the original castle by Nicolson. The castle was then ruined by the army forces of Oliver Cromwell during his Scottish campaign in the 17th century.

Architecture

The small campus of the University of Stirling is one of the major Universities of Stornoways that offers nursing courses. For higher studies, students can even opt for Lews Castle College.

Football is the most popular sport and you can find enough sports clubs offering the game. Ionad Spors Leòdhas (Lewis Sports Centre) is the best sports club in the town and consists of fitness section, sports hall, swimming pool, climbing wall and many other amenities. Other than that you can check out Stornoway Karate Club, which is 30 years old and a member of international Japan Karate association.

Culture

The Hebridean Celtic Festival, organized by Stornoway Golf Club in the month of July, is very much important for its citizens. The festival continues for 3 days and gathers more than 10,000 tourists. The Royal National Mod was held in Stornoway in 2005.
