Poole, UK - Overview

Geographically, Poole is located on the sides of Poole Harbour. Poole is made up to several suburbs like Branksome Park, Talbot Village, Waterloo, Wallisdown, Hamworthy, Merley, Sandbanks and Penn Hill etc. Poole is a gateway to UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Poole is a largest town and seaport in Dorset.  Human settlement dates back to the Iron Age. In the first century Roman landed Poole when they invaded Britain. In the 12th century, Poole served as an important port.

Poole experienced two major invasions one in 876 and other in 1015. In 1568, King Henry VI awarded Staple Port status to Poole. In the same year, Poole was granted legal independence from Dorset. In the 18th and 19th century, Poole started trade with North America and many other English Countries. The most prosperous period of trade was started in the 19th century. In the same period, Poole also experienced an industrial revolution.

In the 18th century, Poole was the busiest port in England. In the World War II, Poole also served as the major departing point for the troops. Poole has wonderful natural harbor, culture and history, which attracts a large number of tourists from all over the world. 

There are many entertainment spots and recreational centers that serve as a source of entertainment for the people of all types. In 1997, Poole became administratively independent from Dorset and it got the status of a County Corporate.  The borough of Poole is administered by a Mayor and councilors. The borough of Poole is rated as the top performing council in UK. There are three major political parties in Poole known as Conservative, Labor and Lib Dems. The local elections are held after every four years. In the House of Commons, there are two parliamentary constituencies that represent Poole.

The town of Poole is inhabited by people with multiple ethnic backgrounds. The major of the people is with white Ethnic background.

Poole is also a home to many industries and manufacturing units. Poole is served by many transportation facilities like metro buses, cars and railway. There are four railway stations in Poole.
