Visitors from around the world are magnetized by the city’s magnificent architectural structure and rich history.  Being a major financial capital and center of commerce, music, fashion trends, entertainment and music is what makes London an all-year tourist destination.  In visiting London, you’ll see the world’s distinguished Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, British Airways London Eye and double-decker buses.

Let’s try to have a glimpse of the City’s history to better understand what makes it so fascinating and interesting.

This 2,000-year old city was once a small Roman settlement on the banks of Thames.  Many Paleolithic flints and Mesolithic axes were found by Archaeologists in various parts of London.

Thames being a multicultural city of over seven million inhabitants is a result of the many invaders who came to the Thames.  The Romans were the first group who established the first permanent settlement, a city they called Londinium, in 43 A.D.  Londinium was soon burnt to the ground because of the uprisings led by Queen Boudicca in 60 or 61 A.D.  London's position lead to more invasions.

Christianity, which was introduced by the Romans, shaped so much of London’s history.  In fact, the first St. Paul’s Cathedral was built in 604 A.D. in London.  King Edward the Confessor moved his court to Westminster Abbey, thus enhancing the city’s importance. King William was crowned in Westminster Abbey in 1066.  He made the Tower of London which he used as his home and fortress.  London Bridge, made of stone, was built in 1476.

Medieval London was so brutal because of the Black Plague or the Black Death.  It appeared in 1348, and repeated its outbreak in 1665.  Not all of London’s mishaps lead futile.  The Great Fire of 1666 was the start of London’s healing and reconstruction.

From 1837-1901, Queen Victoria reigned.  For some, it was a city of wealth yet at the same time a city of colossal poverty because of its growing population from 1 to 6 million in 100 years.

London was shaped by two world wars in the 20th Century.  Many monuments were then built as remembrance of the many people who perished in the Great War from 1914-1918.  These wars led to many immigrants coming in from different countries and together with European Jews they found shelter in London during the 30s, thus contributing to the city’s multi-ethnic makeup.

This is how London came to be a multicultural community.  These people made a huge contribution to the city’s development and technological advancement.

  • Guinevere1988Victoria and Albert Museum >> added on October 24, 2009, by Guinevere1988
The Victoria and Albert Museum is not only famous for the art displayed in its halls but also for the majesty of the building and the great architecture of it.
It is a very diverse museum it covers many fields. There are great pieces of art displayed, but there are also some more modern things in it.
It is also a big place so it takes at least one hour to run through the things shown.
There are sculptures, medieval exhibitions, a history of fashion (with unbelievable dresses) and artifacts from many parts of the world (Japan, China, Asia). In the garden of the museum there is a nice caffee for those who want a rest.
In my opinion the most amazing part of the museum is the diversity of the things on display, each and every member of the family, or of a group can find something interesting in it.
  • Guinevere1988The Dali Universe >> added on October 24, 2009, by Guinevere1988
The Dali Universe is advertised with the headline 'Enter in the mind of the genius'. You can view the Dali exhibition at County Hall in London. It is a wonderful exhibition, but unfortunately cameras and picture taking is forbidden. However, it is a once in a lifetime experience. The place has a unique atmosphere and the works of Dali are spellbinding. Along with Dali some of Picasso's works are also shown. When you enter the exhibition first you can see some pictures about Dali with different quotes from the great artist.
The works of Dali are categorized into different topics and under each painting there is an explanation of what the painting is about. For example there is a group of paintings about the famous novel Decameron, about Don Quijote, about erotica and the art of love, alchemy and mysticism.
For those who can afford it there is also a shop where they are selling some of the works of Dali.
  • Guinevere1988British Museum >> added on October 24, 2009, by Guinevere1988
The British Museum is one of the biggest and most famous museums in London. Personally, I found it the most interesting one. There are many expositions in it and every month there is a special exposition too. This month, until the end of november there is an exposition about Mayan culture. The special expositions have fees, but the rest of the museum is for free.
There are many artifacts from ancient Greece, ancient Rome, Egypt, Africa and Asia too. There are many statues from Greece, vases and objects used in everyday life. The Egyptian expose is wonderful with many statues, mummies, copies from the Egyptian Book of The Dead and objects found in Pyramids. There are also religious objects and symbols exposed.
The Museum is huge and it takes at least two hours to take a good look at everything. Parents can buy special books and teaching materials for kids, so they can understand better what they are seeing.
  • Guinevere1988Buckingham Palace - Changing of the Guards >> added on September 14, 2009, by Guinevere1988
The Buckingham Palace is one of the gems of London. Between May and the end of September the changing of the guards is made a big deal of, it is a big ceremony. It starts around half past eleven and it is a one hour program. There are loads of people watching it, the police is out to ensure the order of the ceremony. It is very exciting and has a very old fashioned, monarch taste. It is a typical british thing. Another thing to notice if you are visiting the Buckingham Palace is the flag. If the flag is raised that means that H.M. The Queen is at Buckingham Palace. If the flag is not raised that she is not there.
  • Guinevere1988The Tower >> added on September 14, 2009, by Guinevere1988
The Tower of London is one of the most interesting and the oldest buildings in London. You can get there with the tube, you just have to get off t the Tower Bridge station. You can take a walk around the Tower for free. You can also go into the Tower. The prices of the Tickets are about 10-20 pounds depending on child, student or adult tickets. When you get into the Tower you will see a lot of man in costumes. Don't be shy, go to them and ask them to take a picture with you. You can take a walk in the Tower Garden and some parts of The Tower are open so you van go inside too. Inside the Tower there is an exhibiton of Henry the VIII's clothes, armor and weapons. This year Henry the VIII is the main attraction of the Tower so you will see loads of stuff about him. The exhibitons also have fun games for kids and adults too. There is a game where you can try your archery skills, one where you can fight like a knight and other fun stuff too. If you are not into knights and Henry the VIII you can also go and take a look at the crown jewellry. However there is always a long line waiting to go in and there is an additional fee of 1 pound. The Tower also has a gift shop where you can buy loads of ridiculously expensive stuff. There are some nice things like books, tea or teddy bears, but you can also find Henry the VIII knickers too.
