Liverpool, UK - Overview

Liverpool, famous for its English Premier League Football Club that is currently ruling the roost, is a famous city located in the Merseyside ceremonial county of north west England. It is situated along the eastern flank of the Mersey estuary and historically it was included as a part of Lancashire.

The economic expansion of Liverpool was triggered by the Atlantic slave trade, and trade relations with mainland Europe, Ireland and West Indies from 18th century onwards.

People of Liverpool are fondly called Scousers (derived from the local culinary delicacy Scouse) or Liverpudlians.

Various music bands, the most famous being the Beatles hail from Liverpool thus pushing the city into the world travel itinerary. The various rock bands of the city helped to make Liverpool a melting pot of youth culture and propelled it onto the international music world stage big league; the Beatles playing the main role in the increasing popularity of Liverpool.

The early Victorian Age witnessed Liverpool handling 40% of the world trade through its port, thus fuelling its growth into a major European city.

The city owes its historic origin and foundation to 1207 when King John’s patent letters declared the foundation of this borough.

But the city truly started to flourish from 1699 onwards through trade practices and attention was paid to the development of the port.

During World War II the city was ravaged by aerial bombing, air raids and witnessed bloody carnages like Cologne in Germany which is its twin.

The portions of the city that survived German bombing started undergoing revival and post war reconstruction from the fifties and sixties.

The spectacularly breathtaking waterfront of Liverpool, especially during the night when the whole city lights up is a scene not to be missed and it is no wonder that Liverpool waterfront has been accorded a UNESCO World Heritage honor, thus adding another feather to Liverpool’s fat cap.

The many sights and attractions of Liverpool which tourists usually throng are: Stanley Dock, Albert Dock, The Town Hall, The Iconic Royal Liver Building, India Buildings, Queensway Tunnel, Martins Bank, Kings Dock, Liverpool Echo Arena, BT Convention Centre,  The Port of Liverpool Building, The Cunard Building,, The Pier Head - The Most Famous Landmark Of Liverpool, Stanley Dock Tobacco Warehouse, Tate Liverpool, The International Slavery Museum, Merseyside Maritime Museum, The Sailor’s Church, Gustav Adolfus Kyrka, The Greek Orthodox Church Of Saint Nicholas, The Anglican Cathedral, The Roman Catholic Metropolitan Cathedral, Liverpool Science Park etc.

The symbol of Liverpool is the liver bird.

The Liverpool Cathedral is an amazing experience for everyone. It has a lot of attractions, exhibitions that you must see and experience if you are in Liverpool.
The opening hours vary from program to program (mostly from 08:00-09:00 to 16:00-17:00). The standard price of a ticket is 4,25 Euro per person and 10 Euro for a family but this may also vary.
