Leeds, UK - History: Survival through time!

History of Leeds leads back to the time of the early Saxons, like many other cities of the British territory. It was actually one of the Saxon villages. By the time the Domesday Book was written, Leeds was considered to be a big town. By the early 13th century, the town was formed into shape by the Lord of Manor, also known as Maurice de Gant. During this period, Leeds also started to extend itself regarding matters of commerce and trade, like most other cities of Britain. Its history is primarily based on its advancements in industrial sectors.

Industrial History of Leeds

The entire plot of land in Leeds was broken down into segments for buildings to come up, like the ones built at the Briggate (then called Bridge Gata). The town was filled with different form of workers from various lifestyles, including carpenters, blacksmiths, butchers and bakers. However, the most common industry, which flourished was that of wool. It was woven and taken through processes to make it fluffier and clean. All this had started by the middle ages and the market was based mainly on these attractions along with the two fairs that were held from time to time.

Introduction of small and large scale industries

By the 18th century, several other small and large scale industries had been introduced to the town of Leeds, apart from wool. Pottery was one of the most uncommon professions being brought there. Then came a period towards the 19th century, where the houses were congested to live in the town of Leeds, and yet the population was overflowing.

Cholera Epidemic in Leeds

At one point of time, the streets were so filthy that it led to the outbreak of cholera epidemic, not once but twice, forcing the administration to make it compulsory for the houses to be connected to the sewers. Then onwards, there have been progresses like the development of General Infirmary and various other social attractions.

Road from manufacturing sector to engineering

Later on came the main part of flourishing by the introduction of linen, catapulting the textile industry and tailoring. Following suit to these effects the leather industry was highlighted along with the formation of Breweries in some parts. However, the scenario changed by great means as the entire township had been flocked with several services and more importance was given to the engineering sector than manufacturing.

Nowadays, Leeds has turned to a major tourist attraction amongst the other cities of Britain, with newer attractions being brought about in the city.
