The seventh largest city in Great Britain, Edinburgh has been the capital of Scotland since the fifteenth century. The cityscape features a predominance of castles and other architecture dating back to medieval times, and Edinburgh is considered to be one of the most beautiful and charismatic cities in the world. The city offers much scope for fun and entertainment, while the surrounding Lothians region is well appreciated by those looking for a more tranquil holiday experience.

There are many opportunities in Edinburgh for cultural delights, and the popular Fringe Festival finds throngs of artists converging into the city from all over the world every year. An open bus tour is a wonderful way to take in the skyline dominated by Scotland’s most famous castle, and to view the atmospheric charms of the city.

History buffs will love the host of museums and galleries. One of the most interesting historical attractions of Edinburgh is the Mary Queen of Scots Trail, which follows some of the finest castles in Scotland, including ruins. Along the way, sample the delights offered by charming cafes and intriguing galleries. You can even find out if you have a Stewart heritage! The famous Dumbarton Castle is not to be missed. It dates back to the fifth century A.D. and is located on a gigantic volcanic rock, and was also a refuge for Mary Queen of Scots as an infant. The castle is open on all days in summer and closed on Thursdays and Fridays in winter.

There are many transport options apart from cabs, including buses, trams and rail.

May to September are the best months to visit, although the weather is quite unpredictable. The festivals reach their peak from in August and early September, so make sure you book your tickets well in advance if you’re planning to catch some shows. Some of the most popular ones are sold out even a year in advance!

The Old Town and New Town consist of most of Edinburgh’s significant tourist attractions, which are conveniently located close together. While most are within walking distance of each other, the area is hilly and can take some stamina to maneuver on foot. The best way to see the city is on foot, as it can be difficult to drive through because of its medieval structures and old streets, especially in the Old Town area. New Town is little better for car trips because of its notorious parking attendants. An Edinburgh Pass is a great deal for tourists, offering entry into several attractions and discounts at restaurants, as well as a detailed guidebook.
