Dundee, UK – Overview: The City of Discoveries

Lying at the North bank of the Firth of Tay, Dundee has rightly been coined as the City of Discoveries, as its history dates back to the Iron Age. In Dundee, one always aim to uncover the mysteries, secrets and myths that are at least two thousand year old, but can still captivate the modern man.

City of Jam, Jute & Journalism

The name Dundee was given to the place due to its ancient history of hosting battles and serving the Lords and the Kings. Some say that the city means the Fort of the Fire, while others stick to the idea that it means Fort of the God. The modern day city evolved during the industrial revolution in Britain. Most people were earning their bread and butter by working in jute mills before the Industrial Revolution. Today, Dundee is popularly known as city of Jam, Jute and Journalism and was awarded with a status of Fair Trade City in 2004.

Atmosphere

With its location in the southern part of UK, Dundee is recognized as the warmest and sunniest place in Scotland. As it is closely located to the bank of North Sea, winters are not dense and severe. There is an extinct volcano called The Law located in city along with a range of proactive snow covered mountains.

Transportation in Dundee

Dundee is connected to Perth, Aberdeen and Forfar with A90 road. The major bypass of the city is Kingsway that is a crowded road for the most of the times. Dundee has its own well-structured and well-planned bus transportation system called Seagate Bus System. The city owes two railway stations and an Airport connected to London International Airport and Birmingham International Airport.

Food

With the changing culture and modern society, a café culture has been introduced in Dundee too. You can eat and enjoy a plenty of fast food at various fast food outlets. Few of the favorite and well know food spots at Dundee are Twin City Café, Bon Appetti, Jahangir and Dominos Pizza.

Education

There are more than forty primary schools and ten secondary schools in the city. Dundee proudly houses two universities too.

Sports

Football is the major sport for the city. Dundee proudly holds two football clubs: Dundee and Dundee United.

Religion

There is satisfactory number of religious places for every religious community in Dundee, which includes churches, mosques and temples. There is a central organization called as Dundee For Christ, which looks after issues related to various churches in the city.
