Cardiff sights and landmarks guide

Cardiff Castle is a 2,000 year old castle that was originally built by the Romans.  In-door tours, walkways through the gardens, and an Interpretation Center focusing on the development of the castle over two millennia are all features of this attraction.

National Museum Cardiff owns one of the largest Impressionist collections outside of Paris, France.  Paintings by Monet, Cezanne, and Renoir were donated by a pair of Welsh sisters in the mid-1900’s.

Millenium Stadium is a brand-new 74,000 seat stadium used for sporting events, concerts, etc.  On days when there are no events being held, you can take a tour and see such sights as the Royal box with the Queen’s seat and learn about the curse in the away-team’s locker room.

Cardiff Bay sits on the site of the old docks.  Now, the area is a recreational center featuring a freshwater lake, water sports, and sailing along with a 5-star hotel, a multi-ethnic restaurant, and other attractions.  The lights at night are enough to rival a Las Vegas casino. 

Cardiff Bay Visitor Center (or The Tube) is a museum featuring displays and exhibits on the development of the bay.

The series Doctor Who was filmed mostly in Cardiff.  That is why visitors to the city have the opportunity to see the Doctor Who Exhibition.  This exhibition is on display in the Red Dragon Center and it features monsters, costumes, and props from the series.

Techniquest is a family recreation center and museum featuring hands-on exhibits, puzzles, and activities that help you to experience science and technology. There is also a Planetarium and a Science Theater.

Norwegian Church is now an art gallery and café but it was once a church which served the Norwegian sailors that worked the docks in Cardiff Bay.  This is also the church where the beloved children’s author Roald Dahl was christened.

Llandaff Cathedral was built in 1107 and is one of the UK’s oldest sacred sites.  “Christ in Majesty”, a modernist sculpture by artist Sir Jacob Epstein is on display in the cathedral.

Visiting St. Fagans: National History Museum is one of the easiest ways to see Wales up-close.  The museum is a 100-acre park containing over forty buildings which were moved from different parts of the country and show how the Welsh people lived for the past half-millennium.

Castell Coch (or Coch Castle) originally belonged to the third Marquis of Bute.  He was one of the richest men in the world and lived during the mid-late 1800’s.  This Gothic castle shows his love for the Medieval time-period and is surrounded by woods.
