Campbeltown, UK – Overview: Whisky capital of the world

Campbeltown is a small town of UK. which was originally known as Kinlochkilkerran. It is located close to the Mull of Kintyre in Argyll in Scotland. This small majestic burgh became a significant centre for ship building, Scotch whisky and an active fishing port. The historical sites, amazing seafood, natural views, lively nightlife, Gaelic music, fishing, climbing and scuba diving are some of the key features of the city.

Story behind Campbeltown’s name

The name Campbeltown was decided in a meeting of local citizens in 1867. This name was derived from Charles James fox Campbell, who was born in the Isle of Skype. He was quite influential for the town and won great respect of the local community of the town.

Culture

The museums and the heritage centre of the city would tell you the facts about the culture of Campbeltown. The Campbeltown Heritage Centre, which was earlier a church, exhibits the whisky, fishing and shipbuilding tradition of the city. The Wee Picture house is the oldest cinema house, which is famous for its tiny pictures.

The Mull of Kintyre is an annual music festival that is held in the month of August. It is the centre point of attraction for many visitors. The performance of Deacon Blue, The Stranglers and Idle wild band groups present a very delightful scene during this festival. The museum of the city has number of ancient collection of things like axeheads, jewelry and combs. The climate of Campbeltown is mild and appropriate for fishing, golfing and sailing.

Whisky

Boats and whisky played an important role in forming the history of Campbeltown. At one point of time, there were several distilleries that used to manufacture tons of authentic whisky. The town itself was found in the kingdom of King James VI.

The whisky is the product for which the Campbeltown is known for. It declared itself as the “Whisky capital of the world”, as it had 34 distilleries. Now, only 3 major distilleries are responsible for producing quality whisky and all of them have a strong goodwill in the market.

Economy

The problems faced by the town are mainly related to economy, which is still weak. Fishing, mining and distilling industries of the town is declining notably, which has led to a feeble economy.

Irrespective of the economy, Campbeltown is still a wonderful place to visit, especially for people with crave for tasting quality whisky.
