The history of Dnepropetrovsk is around 150,000 years old, when the first population lived in the outer regions of this land and especially on the Monastyrsky Island.
Dnepropetrovsk History-The First Farmers
It was from 3500 to 2700 B.C. when the first farmers, called the Cucuteni – Trypillia people, lived on this land. After them, various fishers, hunters, land tillers, and cattle breeders came to settle on this island, attracted by its beauty, shadowy oak forests, huge river valleys, flood meadows, and peaceful backwaters.
Dnepropetrovsk History-The First Step towards Being a Town
It was the middle half of the 16th century when the first few steps towards making Dnepropetrovsk a town were taken. It was 1635 when the first fortress was built by the Polish rulers.
The Russians named this settlement Yekaterinoslav, being also the administrative center of the governorate of Yekaterinoslav. This city experienced the Russo – Turkish War between 1768 and 1774, which ended with the Russian victory.
In 1783 this city of Yekaterinoslav was re - inhabited on the area on which it is today located. This new area was on the southern side of River Dnieper. It was during World War II when Germany occupied Ukraine and this city went under the rule of Germany. Many people died during this world war and the development of this city was literally halted.
Dnepropetrovsk History-Ukrainian Independence
In 1990 Ukraine won independence and this proved to be an important turning point for Dnepropetrovsk’s growth. The city soon started to move on the path of industrialization and today it is one of the most industrialized cities in Ukraine.
