Thanya Buri, Thailand - Overview: Enjoy A Pilgrimage To The Priestly City

Across the river Chao Phraya, lays the small town of Thanya Buri. After Ayuthya fell, it was the capital of Thailand in the 18th century. Later, Rama I moved the court to Bangkok.

To roam the city, there are long tailed boats, which leave from several piers of the Chao Phraya River.  Finally, they turn south and enter Thanya Buri. There are a number of tours available and any one between Tha Chang and Tha Oriental is good. The River City, very near to Tha Si Phraya, is also something to look out for.

Again a sight worth visiting is Wat Sai Floating Market, which perished almost 40 years ago. Today, it exists only for tourists. However, this died out floating market has been replaced by a much more beautiful Damnoen Saduak. Very near to the new floating market is the snake farm, which conducts shows every 20 minutes. However, the snake farm, which lies very close to Siam Square, is more professional.

Visitors can also visit a series of beautiful temples in Thanya Buri. The very impressive is Wat Kalaya Nimit has murals of King Rama III and a very large image of Buddha. The on-ground Chinese statues are also interesting. Just south of this temple is the Wat Prayoon Wong, in which there lies an artificial hill and a beautiful pond where big turtles live. The Wat Arun is the temple of the Dawn, 80 meter high.

North to the Wat Arun Temple lies the Royal Barges Museum. Inside this museum, there are almost 50 ornamentally designed long boats, which were used during the Krathin Festival.

Then there comes the Wat Suwannaram, which is also famous for its murals. They were designed and crafted by professional painters and are considered Bangkok’s best. The Wat rakhang is also a famous temple. Wat Phai Lom, located on the east of Chao Phraya, is very famous for its migratory birds.

The beauty of this small town is not only restricted to temples and markets. As darkness surrounds, so do lights. Being a city of water, it is quite expected that it will provide the finest imported wines. Moreover, Thai food is very famous. Pubs remain open till late at night and they are quite proud of having their own Thai-made drinks.
