An Overview of Nakhon Pathom, Thailand

Nakhon Pathom serves as the capital of the Nakhon Pathom Province of Thailand and the largest stupa of the world is situated in this area only. Situated at a distance of only 56 km from Bangkok, it is a city which dates back to the 150 BC.

 It is a revered city for the Buddhist as it is believed that Buddhism was introduced into the country from this place only. Nakhon Patham has occupied an area of about 2100 sq. km. and its administration has been divided into 6 Amphoes: Bang Len, Muang, Don Tum, Nakhon Chaisi, Kamphaeng Saen and San Phran.

To See: Phra Pathom Chedi is the biggest stupa in Thailand and belongs to the Wat Phra Pathom Chedi Ratchaworaviharn, a major royal temple. The National Museum exhibits items from Dvaravati times most of which are found in the Wat Phra Pratone Chedi. The crown prince of 1907-10, Vajiravudh, built the Sanam Chan Palace which now houses a Silpakorn University campus and also the King Rama 6 museum. The Phutthamonthon Park has been devoted to the Buddhism and has been located in the eastern area of the province. Suan Sam Pran is one of the biggest gardens located at Phetkasem highway. Situated nearby, the Sam Pran Crocodile farm has crocodile and elephant shows and also includes a zoo. The Jesada Technik Museum has a huge collection of old trucks, planes and cars. The status of Paya Kong near the Nakhon Patham central market has been much revered among the masses.

To Eat: There are several food stalls and food hawkers in the Night Market where the visitors can enjoy a huge variety of foods. It is a clean open air as well as affordable food court which opens from 6 pm to 11 pm. Do not miss to drop in at the Flying Ice Cream and eat the coconut milk and sticky rice cooked in the bamboo.

To Get in: BKS public transport buses (lines 997 and 83) leave the Bangkok’s Southern Bus Terminal and take about 1 hour to reach Nakhon Pathom. Apart from that, there are non-stop mini-bus services between Big C Superstore of Nakhon Pathom and Victory Monument of Bangkok. The Big C has been located on the main road and has many 2-wheel and 4-wheel taxis which you can take to reach your final destination. Trains from Thonburi Train Station of Bangkok to Nam Tok/ Kanchanaburi serve Nakhon Pathom. All the Nakhon Pathom hotels are designed with for the Thai people. The best part is that the prices are quite reasonable and the rooms are fairly comfortable.
