Mae Hong Son Travel Guide, Thailand

Mae Hong Son is a province in Thailand located in the northwest part of the country near Chiang Mai and Lampang. It’s a very picturesque province as most of the settlements are locate in the valleys surrounded by very tall mountains. The presence of the mountains has practically shielded this part of the country from outside influences. As a result, culture and traditions are very alive in this area.

Because of the popularity, access to this place has relatively improved but it is still challenging. The Chiang Mai airport, although small is always teeming with tourists who wanted to visit the villages in the province. Going from one village to another is a little bit challenging but would appeal to anyone who wants to go for an adventure. If you don’t have a 4x4 truck, it will be virtually impossible for you to go from one place to another. Motorcycle is the standard mode of transportation used by the locals. The best way to travel through Mae Hong Son is by hitchhiking. But remember that you have to do your share by paying part of the fuel as the travel could be costly.

There are hundreds of reasons why you have to visit this part of Thailand. It’s a very traditional place but you can still enjoy the modern amenities in most parts of the province such as internet and basic cable. The popular “long necked tribes” could be found here. A trek through the Tham Pla – Pha Suea National Park is a very memorable experience since you can ride an elephant while visiting different places in this park. There are numerous waterfalls that you can visit and enjoy and even get some hired help to bring and cook food for you. Do not miss the Phu Klon Country Club if you wanted to have a therapeutic spa experience.

The best time to visit this part of Thailand is in November. During this month, the province has numerous celebrations that are always flocked by locals as well as tourists from other countries. The Bua Tong Blossom Festival, Loi Krathong Festival and Chong Phara Procession happen between the last week of October until November. All of these activities involve festive dancing, display of fruits and remarkable display of flowers brought in by locals from different parts of the province.

Mae Hong Son offers such a unique experience for tourists that a week’s visit might not even be enough.
