Zermatt, Switzerland – Overview

Zermatt is a municipality in the canton of Valais in Switzerland. It is located in the Pennine Alps at the northern base. It is marked with the year around family ski resort. It has a population of approximately 6000 people. The population varies through the seasons. The village of Zermatt is located at the height of 1,620m. It is bordered with Italy.

Zermatt is the starting point for a few big glaciers including also Patrouille des Glaciers. It also serves as a starting point for big hikes including the Haute Route. Cable cars and chairlifts are available for the hider and skiers throughout the year.

A nearby cable car station Cervinia cable car station can be used to cross into Italy. The valley of Zermatt serves as a great tourist spot in Switzerland. Ever year large numbers of tourists from all over the world come here to explore its beauty and attractions. Zermatt is famous for being a great ski resort. The name of Zermatt has been derived from alpine meadows. The town of Zermatt was discovered by British mountaineers in the mid-19th century.

A rack railway line lies at the height of 3,089m. Zermatt is also used as a terminal for the Glacier Express Railway service. Zermatt has great attraction for the tourists. There is a large number of sights and attraction of touristic importance including Monte Rosa, Matterhorn, Hohtäll, Rote Nase, The Mattervispa river and Winkelmatten etc.

Zermatt is well-served by railway, cars and local bus transportation system. Getting around the Zermatt provides you with great fun. The summer months are ideal for visiting the Zermatt resort. Skiing in Zermatt is a great fun for the enthusiastic skiers.

There are four popular areas for skiing including Gornergrat, Schwarzsee, Sunnegga and Klein Matterhorn etc. All these skiing spots vary in altitude and provide a spectacular view of the whole valley. In addition to the skiing visitors also enjoy with hiking, biking, skating, snowboarding, snowmobiling and skating etc.

Zermatt is also home to some of the most popular hotels of Switzerland. These hotels are Hotel Parnass, Style Hotel, Alpenroyal Swiss Quality Hotel Zermatt, Couronne Hotel Zermatt, Ginabelle Hotel Zermatt, Christiania Hotel Zermatt and Allalin Hotel Zermatt etc. These hotels provide every type of accommodation options to the guests.

Zermatt provides unique experience of shopping to the guests. Zermatt is also linked up with other popular resorts Gornergrat, Sunnegga and Klein Matterhorn / Schwarzse etc. These resorts can be access via chairlifts and cable cars.

    If you like wandering throught the nature combined with climbing, you should definitely go to Zermatt. There is also an special railway, Matterhorn-Gotthard-Bahn (MGB), to reach the city.
