Winterthur, Switzerland - Overview

Winterthur is a city in northern Switzerland situated about 20 miles away Zurich, in the basin of the Töss River. It is one of the finest cities in Switzerland. It is one of the fastest growing cities in Switzerland. Its estimated population is more than 100,000 inhabitants. In the local dialect it is also known as Winti. Winterthur is a center of Tech, machinery and agricultural industries.

Winterthur is a regional hub of transportations railway and industries in Switzerland. It is connected to Italy and Germany by train and to Schaffhausen, Turbenthal and Geneva through motorways.

Many corporate companies have their regional offices in Winterthur. Some of the most significant companies are today's Sulzer Ltd, Sulzer Brothers and Rieter.

The largest bank of Switzerland, Union Bank of Switzerland (UBS) was also founded in this. Winterthur also headquarters the insurance business company of Switzerland “Winterthur Insurance'. Winterthur is also known for its educational institutes like Technikum. The Technikum is the largest school of technology in Switzerland.

Winterthur also has a great attractions for the tourists from all over the world. There are a lot of wonderful landscapes, museums, parks, nightclubs, hotels, pubs, restaurants and churches of historical importance. Some of the most popular touristy spots in Winterthur are Kunstmuseum Winterthur, Fotomuseum Winterthur, Oskar Reinhart Collections and Villa Flora etc.

Winterthur has great culture and history. Many building and monuments of historical importance can still be seen in Winterthur like the city hall, Stadthaus, which was built by Gottfried Semper. The Stadthaus hosts wonderful events and musical programs throughout the year. The Orchester Musikkollegium Winterthur is another important place.

The church of St. Laurenz also situated in Winterthur, which has links to the 12th century. The Town Hall of Winterthur was built in 1781 and the assembly hall in 1865. Winterthur has received Wakker Prize in 1989 for the preservation of its architectural heritage.
