Geography

On the banks of River Moskva the sprawling city of Moscow lies about 500 feet above sea level and is roughly oval in shape. Towards the north bank of River Moskva lies Kremlin, a citadel with historical buildings which was once the residence of the Czars and now the centre of Russian government. Around Kremlin there are enormous buildings that still echo the glories of the past. The Ring Roads that circle the city is a unique feature of Moscow.

People and culture

Muscovites are warm and friendly, but they do not trust foreigners easily and they need to be convinced. Only a few cities in the world have similar culture to Moscow. The museums and galleries are the best places to peep into the culture of Moscow. The city’s art arenas have one of the largest collections of paintings, fine arts and other stuff that lets you know about the tradition and culture of Moscow. The famous Russian ballet is loved by the natives as well as the visitors in the city. The city is the centre of Russia’s performing arts including ballet. Stretched around the city are about 39 theatres and 132 cinema halls and as many as 24 concert halls for performing arts.

Architecture

The architecture of Moscow definitely impresses any one visiting the city. The place is flooded with old cathedrals and churches that speak about the history of the city. In the modern era, architect Shukhov added a lot of architectural grace to the place. Today Moscow is lined with sky touching buildings that has given the city a cosmopolitan look.

Infrastructure

Moscow faced a lot of financial crisis after the fall of the Soviet Union, but it soon recovered and moved back to the road of development. The city has a fairly good infrastructure. It has a good rail road as well as air transport facilities. It has seen many infrastructure developments in the recent years. Moscow is getting a facelift with trade complexes, sprawling office buildings, residential buildings and recreational facilities.

  • zangazangaUse the Metro >> added on November 16, 2009, by zangazanga
Using the metro is the best and fastest way to get around Moscow, although it might prove to be difficult to understand how things work.

Metro stations are marked with a big, red 'M' letter. There are 11 lines, each marked with different colors and they come very frequently, less than 2 minutes during the peak time.

It can be difficult that almost everything in the metro is written in the Cyrillic alphabet. The best is if you are somewhat familiar with it, but you can get along even if you are not.

You should carefully listen to the announcements on the train. If you still get lost, you can get off the metro, find the name of the station on the platform (here you can find it written in Latin alphabet as well) and wait for the next train, only 1 or 2 minutes.

There is another trap. There are stations where two or more different lines meet. These interchanged stationd usually have different names for different lines/colors. Cool, isn't it? ;)

You can save money if you purchase a block of 10 or 20 tickets. More than one people can use the block, you just have to pass it back to your friend when it pops up after you are through the machine.

One more interesting thing, the metro tunnels and stations are very deep underground for they were constructed to be used as bomb shelters as well.

Anyone visiting Moscow will certainly need to go see the Red Square with the Kreml in the back. This is an amazing site simply because of it's magnitude, location, and history behind it.
