Cluj-Napoca is one of the oldest cities in Transylvania, perhaps the most famous of Romania’s historical regions. Cluj-Napoca, or simply Cluj, as it is called by the locals, is a city steeped in history and culture. Founded by the Roman colonists who came to the area in the 2nd century AD, Cluj-Napoca has a long tradition of being a centre for culture, learning and trade. The city’s atmosphere is strongly multicultural, partly due to the large number of ethnic Hungarians who live there, but also because it is home to one of Romania’s leading universities which welcome thousands of international students. Cluj-Napoca is a great place for tourists who want to discover Romanian culture, and it is chock full of interesting sights, museums, and lively clubs and cafes. Cluj-Napoca Travel Guide - Transport

The cheapest and easiest way to get around in Romania is by train, but although you can travel by rail from practically any corner of the country to another, train rides can be rather long, and often crowded. There are several types of trains, depending on how fast they go and how many stops they make along the way. Keep in mind that when travelling on the so called ‘personal’ trains, you might not always find a seat. If you can afford it, either take an intercity train, an “accelerat”, or get a first-class ticket. There are regular train connections to Cluj-Napoca from Bucharest, Timisoara and other major cities, and there is also a direct international connection to Budapest. If your point of departure is a smaller town, you might have to change a few trains to reach your destination.

From Bucharest or Timisoara you can also take the plane to Cluj if you’re already in the country. There are regular flights to and from several European cities, such as Rome, Barcelona, Vienna or Paris. Cluj International Airport is located at about 20 minutes’ distance from the city centre by bus. Tickets can be purchased from the ticket booth near the bus station or at the terminal. The historic centre of the city is not overly large, so you can get around on foot. Public transport services in Cluj are fairly good and very cheap, but you can also take a taxi to get to some of the more remote neighborhoods.

There aren’t many backpacker hostels in the city, but hotel rates are relatively low compared to western standards. Meteor Hotel on Eroilor Boulevard is a reasonably comfortable mid-range hotel with the advantage of being located right in the city centre. The restaurant downstairs serves hearty food in large portions, and it is quite popular with the student crowd. For an amazing view of the city, go to Belvedere Hotel, on top of the Fortress Hill. The hotel has luxury facilities and it is located at a five minutes’ walk from the city centre. If you’re looking for a unique five star hotel, this Cluj Napoca Travel Guide recommends Déjà Vu, situated in one of the quietest neighborhoods of the city. The hotel looks uncannily like a gingerbread house, but it has some of the best amenities you can find in town.

  The best way to get to the city from the airport is by Taxi. Also, once you are in the city, the best way to travel is again by taxi, it's cheap and they don't rip you off ever.
