The local topography is dominated by the high plain of Targoviste on which the city is set, and the low Ialomita Valley which crosses the city and creates unique sceneries. The city has a temperate continental climate characterized by mild winters and chilly summers with an average annual temperature of 9, 9ºC. These weather particularities are also due to the fact that Targoviste is surrounded by hills which create a protecting barrier in front of the cold air masses. The same hills are the reason why frequent temperature inversions occur. Winds are a discreet presence, except summer when they become violent during seasonal thunder storms determining important damages in agriculture and urban infrastructure.

The local hydrographic network is represented by the Ialomita River and a few small tributary streams which cross the city.

The local flora and fauna is in perfect harmony with the topography and climate and is strongly influenced by the urban activities present in Targoviste. The Ialomita Valley is populated mainly with species of poplar, willow, wild cherry, oak and maple trees while the city houses numerous ornamental trees and flowers.

Fauna is very well adapted to the local conditions and is represented by several terrestrial, aquatic and subterranean species. The most common are the squirrel and the fox and on the Ialomita Valley the hare, hedgehog and ground squirrels. The aquatic population is represented by species of perch, broad snout and barbell, very appreciated by local fishermen.

Population in Targoviste has been decreasing since the nineties when it reached the highest value of 100.900 inhabitants. Nowadays only 89.000 people live here among which 96,6% are Romanians followed by Roma, Bulgarians and Hungarians. The dominating religion is Christian Orthodox like most Romanian cities, followed by the Evangelic, Roman-Catholic and Pentecostal.

Targoviste is a city with a captivating cultural life and numerous places of interest where related events take place. Most artistic events take place at one of the three culture houses in the city, at the Art Gallery and Art Hall. There are also two theatres in town: the Tony Bulandra Theatre and the City Theatre for Children and Youth, both offering a great performance of classic and modern theatre plays every time. The city also has several traditional music choirs which are very present on the local stages and also on international ones.
