Located on the south bank of the Danube River, this town dates as far back as the Roman Empire, remnants of this period having survived to this day. Apart from important historical monuments, Drobeta Turnu Severin also has beautiful scenery due to the vicinity to the Danube’s gorge The Iron Gates.

Drobeta-turnu Severin, Travel Guide - What to Visit

Though this is not a large city, it has many things to offer. You will definitely have to start with the ruins of Trajan’s bridge, one of the Roman’s empire boldest architectural works. For those of you who are not familiar with Romania’s history, Trajan was the Roman emperor who succeeded in conquering Dacia (the territory of Romania today), making it a part of the Roman Empire. The Romanian language nowadays is actually a blending of Latin and Dacian language. To conquer Dacia, Trajan ordered a bridge to be built over the Danube; strikingly as it may seem, the bridge was done in only three years and not even today do we know the complex architectural schemes that were used to build it.

History is present within another monument, the ruins of the medieval fortification that dates from the 13th century. Another people with whom Romanians have fought many battles, the Turks, have destroyed the fortification in 1524. Only the Tower of observation, called Sever’s Tower has survived until now and it can be visited in the Roses Park.

One should definitely not miss The Iron Gates Regional Museum which is an impressive building waiting for visitors eager to find out more about the Danube’s gorge in terms of history, archeology, and ethnography. The museum also recreates the Danube’s fauna in a spectacular aquarium.
