Doha history

The capital of the Islamic country Qatar is Doha. It is its largest city and houses almost eighty percent of its population that has reached about 400,000 in 2005. It is also the economic center of the country because almost all businesses and economic activities are based in this city. It is also the seat of government and education center – where a certain part of it is devoted to research and education. Recently, Doha came into view in 2006 when it hosted the Asian Games – a multi-sport event attended by most countries in Asia happening only once in every four years. Although predominantly a newer city, the striking influence of the Islamic religion is painted all over the city.

In 1850, the city was founded under the name of Al-Bida. However, it was immediately changed into the now more popular Doha. Doha is believed to be derived from the Arabic word al-dawha, which means big tree. This is done in reference to a prominent tree that has stood at the site of the original fishing village in the Eastern coast of the Qatar peninsula, where the city came to be. In 1882, a fortress by the name of Al Wajbah was built by Al Rayyan in preparation for the then rampaging Ottoman Empire. A year later, Sheikh Qassim led a Qatari army to victory against the Ottomans making it one of the places in the Middle East that has not succumbed to the invasion of the Ottoman Turks.

In 1916, Doha was made the capital of the then British Protectorate of Qatar. In 1917, the Al Kout fortress located in the center of the city was built by Sheikh Abdulla Bin Qassim Al-Thani as part of solidifying the defenses of the city.

In 1949, oil exportation began in Qatar, which until now is one of their main exports with 800, 000 barrels per year. In 1969, a popular landmark known as the Government house housed the then British ruler or Qatari ruler. Finally, after years of long wait, the country has gained its independence in 1971.

Throughout the course of history, numerous installations have been built in the Qatari Capital of Doha. These include various mosques, museums, fortresses, and even seats for the government. As of today, these are breathtaking and unforgettable wonders of the ancient Qatar that is willingly shared to the local and foreign visitors.
