Biñan is one of the three municipalities of the first district of Laguna. It is notably among the fastest developing cities because of its proximity to Manila. Biñan is accessible via the South Luzon Expressway.

At present, it is also an uptown district and a site of prime industrial estates and two of the country’s major export processing zones. With a current population of about 300,000, Biñan has a continuing potential for progress and development.

The Municipality of Biñan is bounded north by San Pedro and Sta. Rosa on its southern end. The west is bordered by Carmona, in Cavite, while the eastern and northern area of Biñan is bordered by the Laguna de Bay. Most of its land area is generally level or plain area, which makes it very suitable for agriculture and urban development. 

Economy

Biñan has been regarded as an important key trading center location. Since the municipality is abundant in agricultural and fresh produce like fruits, vegetables, meat and fish, retailers and merchandisers from other towns trade daily in the town’s market area.

The municipality is also famous for its local delicacy called Puto Biñan. This specialty is made from rice wheat with cheese and butter on top.

Manufacturing of footwear like shoes and slippers are also major industries in Biñan, specifically in Dela Paz and Malaban areas. The vicinity of Platero also boasts of hat or “sombrero” manufacturing.

Biñan is home to two major industrial parks, the Laguna International Industrial Park and the Laguna Technopark Inc. A huge percentage of the municipality’s economy and the country as well, are owed to the growing number of multi-national companies in these industrial locations. Employment opportunities also emerged which provided local jobs for Biñan residents and nearby municipalities.

 Some of the companies situated in Biñan’s industrial parks include Honda Parts Manufacturing Corporation, Nissin Brake, Cirtek Electronics, Kito Corporation, Isuzu Philippines, Toshiba, Hitachi, TDK, Nidec among others.

Architecture

Although Biñan has a rising number of commercial and modern structures, it still retains and preserves some of its historic and old-fashioned colonial houses. Biñan’s architectural structures reflect the great influence of the Spanish era. There are several old Spanish-style churches with remarkably intricate Baroque designs that are preserved to this day.

Education

The municipality of Biñan is regarded as the learning hub of Laguna’s first district. It has the most secondary and tertiary educational institutions in the area.

The municipality’s public schools include the Biñan National High School and Biñan Elementary School, Pagkakaisa Elementary School and the San Vicente Elementary School.

Other educational institutions in Biñan include the Lake Shore Educational Institute and the Jacobo Z. Gonzales Memorial School of Arts and Trade offering vocational training.
