Batangas city, the Philippines – Overview

Batangas is a capital city in the Province of Batangas, the Philippines. It is located 56 miles south of Manila. Batangas has been an important trade center and port. The city of Batangas is famous for producing cotton, fabric, coconut and silk. It has also been a hub of fishing and chemical industries.

According to a recent consensus the population of the city is more than 350,000 people.

Being a capital city of the Batantas province, it serves as a major recreational, educational, industrial and trade center of the area. The port of Batangas has significant importance in the trade of the region.

Batangas was founded by Spanish missionaries in 1572. Later, the Spanish government appointed Don Antonio Casulao as the first governor of Batangas.

When Americans came in the 1900s, they established a local civil government in Batangas. They appointed Jose Villanueva as a Municipal President. After his term expired in 1903, he was succeeded by Juan Palacios, Jose Arguelles, Marcelo Llana, Sisenando Ferriols, Ventura Tolentino, Julian Rosales, Juan Gutierrez and Julian Rosales etc.

During the World War II, Batangas was badly destroyed by Japanese A6M Zero bombardment. Later the city was reconstructed.

Batangas city is home to many popular educational institutes including Saint Bridget College, University of Batangas, Lyceum of the Philippines University-Batangas and Westmead International School etc. There are many religious places in Batangas city including City's Protestant Church, Basilica of Immaculate Conception Parish and Iglesia ni Kristo etc.

Batangas city is regarded as a major touristic spot in the region. There are many historical sites, landscapes and visiting places. Some of the most popular sights and attractions in Batangas city include Bay City Mall, SM City Batangas, Basilica Immaculada Conception, The Batangas Seaport Terminal and the Citimart etc.

Batangas offers a large number of accommodation options to tourists. Popular hotels in the area are ALPA Hotel, Batangas Country Club, Quinio Hotel, Days Hotel and Hotel Pontefino etc.

Politically the city of Batangas is divided into the 105 barangays. Some major barangays are Banaba Ibaba, Balete, Malalim, Kumba, Santa Clara, Ilijan, Pinamucan, Gulod Itaas, Conde Itaas, Bolbok, Haligue Silangan and Haligue Kanluran etc.

The city of Batangas serves as a major seaport for many cities including Mindoro, Visayas, Palawan and Marinduque.
