Rugged, picturesque and all-nature; these are just some of the descriptive labels that can be used to identify Banaue, Philippines. Visitors to the place will definitely agree once they get to personally see what Banaue has to offer.

Banaue is one of the leading tourist destinations in the Philippines and in Asia. The popularity of the place is linked to one single natural wonder - the rice terraces. These rice terraces are the ones that make Banaue what it is now, and what it will be in the next generations to come.

These rice terraces considered the main draw in Banaue are examples of ways to effectively maximize and also optimize the rice cultivation in hilly and mountainous areas. The rice terraces are known for the leveled sections that can be seen on the sides of the hilly and the mountainous regions.

The creation of terraces has agricultural significance and promotes agricultural productivity.

These rice terraces also became an attraction. They are considered to be very old, in fact, they date back 2000 years and these terraces were carved on the mountains of the area. They formed part of the larger rice terraces of the Philippine Cordilleras of the northern Philippines. The Banaue rice terraces are dubbed as the ‘eighth wonder of the world’ and this is the reason why the majority of the visitors go to Banaue.

The length of all the terraces when linked to one another would actually encircle half the globe. And this little fact actually sustains the interest in the rice terraces of Banaue.

Though the rice terraces dominated the scenery, there is more to Banaue than these awesome works of artisans and nature.

The place also serves as a great stopover for back-packers and for tourist who may want to make their way to Batad or Sagada. The area is relaxing enough to be a brief stop-over for a couple of nights.

The streets of Banaue can also serve as the tourists’ source of fun and inspiration thanks to the basket wares and wood carvings that are offered by the many stores that line up the streets.

These shops can be a source for excellent souvenirs. Banaue and the neighboring areas are great as well for those who seek outdoor fun through biking.

Mountain adventure and cummunicating with nature are just some of the most popular recreational activities in Banaue.

For those interested in visiting Banaue, it is suggested that they register at the Banaue Tourist Information Center. Minimal fees will be collected and these can be used for the conservation programs of some of the nature spots in the area including maintenance of these great rice terraces.
