Juliaca Travel Guide, Peru –: Commercial Travel Conduit

Located in Puno Region, Peru, Juliaca is the largest city of the region. It is also the capital of San Román Province. The city is located in Altiplano, which is more than 3,800 meters above the sea level. Again, the nearness of Collao Plateau and Lake Titicaca provide the city a favourable climate.

Commercial Travel Conduit

Since Juliaca lacks the culture fanfare and glorious lake views common to most cities in Puno region, it mainly plays the role of a commercial travel conduit.

Economy

Cattle breeding help in creating a strong trade in textiles and leather goods. The city also boasts of wool trading.

Culture

Culture buffs, don’t worry, Juliaca does offer a few attractions, which will surge you over till you reach the next destination! Located near Plaza Bolognesi is Iglesia La Merced. Again, few blocks northwest is Iglesia Santa Catalina, a colonial church. Again, if you are in Juliaca on Sunday, do find some time for Plaza Melgar. It is a huge market, where you’ll be able to browse and buy affordable alpaca wool sweaters. More touristy markets are held daily, near the plaza and the railway station. However, do watch out for pickpockets, who are frequent in this area.

Transportation

Although the city lacks the cultural attractions needed for tourists, it has other facilities for tourists. Juliaca has an airport, which is close to Lake Titicaca. Again, its railways and highways connection to Cusco, Puno and Arequipa are simply wonderful. Roads, which extend from the city, are also excellent for making a trip to Bolivia along serpentine back roads.

Accommodation

If you want to spend the night here, the best accommodation facilities in Juliaca are situated near Plaza Bolognesi. You’ll also find a train station very near to these accommodations. Some of the favoured hotels in the city include Hotel Luquini, Hotel Sakura and The Royal Inn. These hotels will not only offer comfort, but will be suited to your pocket.

Cuisine

Peruvian specialties, popular amongst visitors to Peru, are available in most restaurants of the city. You can find great spots for having fresh bread, cake or coffee along with decent choices of drinks. Places like Confiteria Meli Melo, Royal Inn Restaurant and Bar Restaurant Trujillo are always flocked with locals and tourists throughout the day.
