Asuncion Travel Guide – The Young and Affordable City

Asuncion is the capital of Paraguay and the largest city in the country, that doesn’t belong to any department and is autonomous as a city. It is the economical and cultural centre of the country and it has the unique global feature that its Municipality is listed on the Asuncion Stock Exchange. It has a population of 520.000, but the metropolitan area around the city is home to more than two of the six million inhabitants of Paraguay. A fact of significant importance which should be listed in all Asuncion travel guides is that more than 65 percent of the population is under the age of thirty, which makes Asuncion a young and vivid city. This is due to the population migrations that started taking place in the ‘70s and brought the rural population to the capital, causing it to develop economically at an incredible pace. Asuncion’s population is also sustained by the fact that it is a very affordable city to live in, being ranked the least expensive city in the world for years in a row.

Asuncion Travel Guide – Climate and Economy

Geographically, the city sits on the left bank of the Paraguay River and it is very close to Argentina on Paraguay’s south border. The landscape is spectacular and tourists come to visit the city in spring during the blossoming season, as well in summer and autumn for the region’s specific vegetation. The climate is also favorable, keeping warm temperatures between 23 and 33 degrees. The city is served by a port on the Paraguay River which gives it a significant economical boost and its main industries are footwear, textiles and tobacco. Agriculture is practically non-existent and much of the economy is based in the business and services sector. Busses serve for public transportation in the city and there are routes which lead to nearby countries like Argentina, Bolivia and Uruguay. The city of Nadi in Fiji is just 30 kilometers away, while Noumea in New Caledonia is located at more than 1000 kilometers.

Asuncion Travel Guide – Education and Urban Aspect

As you’ll probably find in most Asuncion travel guides, the city literacy level is 95 percent, the largest in the country. There is a growing number of schools and Universities in the city, both public and private. There are also many art museums and examples of colonial architecture throughout the city, which combine with the most modern shopping malls and summer terraces, all of which give the city its specificity. Soccer is very popular in the city and there are many football fields near the city centre, which often host rock concerts or other kinds of manifestations.
